Hello Carl,
As a born Somalilander, but without a Somaliland passport, I was very glad to come across your article about 'my' country. I went back to Somaliland for the first time since I was a toddler, two years ago today. Coming off the plane from Addis, I could almost have kissed the ground. We stayed a week and we seemed to have done many of the same things you did... in fact I am wondering whether that lunch you are showing here wasn't served in that restaurant next to the 'river'. I am not so keen on fat boiled goat meat myself but I loved the Somali rice..... mmmmm!!!
(Just one thing, the Italians were never in Somaliland... I think the pasta came over the border from Somalia and Ethiopia)
You seem to be very positive about your trip to the country and I agree with you wondering about it being safe. We felt safe enough but it semed as much a matter of courtesy to take a couple of armed guards around with you, and they made good company as well.
Did you go for a swim at Berbera? Great beach, eh?
Cheers, Charles

Preemptive Matt Comment
The county is mainly fed by the Nomads who still wander the nation raising mainly goats and camels. Thus if you don't like goat you are in trouble here. Also there is a lot of pasta. A hang over from from it's Italian colonial past. Much to the amusement of my guards, i took This photo for you. Gotta say though, Somali food is damn good
